Kanei Iwatsuri underwent a lengthy and rigorous training regimen under Masahiko Kimura. He was born in 1944 and began his training at the age of 11 in 1955. He became a police officer in Hyogo, Japan, in 1966, and was unbeaten in the Police Judo Taikais in 1966 and 1967. Iwatsuri won a Sambo tournament in Moscow, Russia in 1969. He won the All Japan Senshuken Judo Taikai in 1971.
