Description
COMPOSITION IS EVERYTHING
This group coaching will concentrate on composition and how it can be utilized to enhance your narrative. Each week, there will be a new assignment/topic for images to be critiqued. You can submit already captured images or create new photos weekly for each theme. This will assist me in covering key issues that I believe are vital in a documentary family picture session. You will also be invited to submit a total of two questions every week for me to personally answer. While the Q&A may be on anything relating to photography and business, I would want the photographs to be specialized to the specific subjects, ideally recent photos. You will be added to FB Study Hall prior to the class. Inside the study hall, you’ll discover a resource page with all the material you’ll need, submission links, and a library of pre-recorded films addressing each of the six sessions.
Week 1: The child’s perspective
Week 2: The voyeuristic viewpoint.
Week 3: How to Layer Correctly.
Week 4: Unknown.
Week 5: The anonymous topic.
Week 6: I adore your broad angle.
The Study Hall has proven to be extremely beneficial for students, providing a private and safe space for students to share their thoughts about the class, ask questions, critique each other’s photos, and connect with other photographers who share the same interest in family photojournalism and are all on the same page. While I am not particularly engaged in the group, it is a highly active and supportive community.
The tentative timetable is shown below.
Please understand that when the class approaches, the schedule may need to be altered somewhat. Everything is documented and uploaded on a unique resource website exclusively for the kids, which is fantastic. While you are not required to watch the critique live, those who do have the opportunity to ask questions and comment on the images I am working on.

Kirsten Lewis, your instructor
Kirsten is a Denver-based documentary family photographer, but her work takes her all over the world, from New Zealand to Dubai, Brazil to Canada, Italy to Hawaii. Despite the fact that she has been shooting for over fifteen years, it was her teaching on Creative Live that truly pushed her documentary family photography technique to the forefront as a desirable alternative to the typical family picture.
She has mentored photographers all over the world, not just in family photography, but also as a coach, enabling them to create their own distinctive voice by embracing their personal experiences and pushing them to establish a personal point of view. Kirsten’s speeches are notorious for making you laugh one minute and cry the next, motivating her audience to face their fears, acknowledge their inadequacies, and move on. Despite her many accomplishments, which include being featured on the Huffington Post on a regular basis, interviews all over the world, and being named one of the top 100 photographers on Fearless Photographers, it is her role as a mother and wife to her daughter Byrdie Mae and husband street photographer Gregory Bethmann that gives her the most pride and joy. That, and any Scrabble triumph, of which there are many.
