DescriptionImagine laying in an ICU hospital bed after an unexpected operation, slipping in and out of consciousness as the medical team struggles to keep you medicated. You have sensations and ideas as if you are awake, but you are only seeing a smattering of what is happening on around you. You are unable to converse or interact with medical personnel, leaving you feeling helpless and perplexed. You’re afraid that if you go back to sleep, you’ll never wake up.
The trauma involved with the medical treatment prevents the client in this example video from sleeping soundly and waking rested. She is unable to fall or remain asleep because she is continuously scared that if she does, she would never wake up. Laurel Parnell, an EMDR expert, provides the procedures necessary for the client to fully confront the remaining anxieties, feelings, and memories of being in that hospital bed. Dr. Parnell incorporates bilateral stimulation into treatment and guides the client through the process of processing memories and emotional triggers. As the session proceeds, the client begins to picture the bed as a secure and welcome environment, and he or she is no longer fearful of falling asleep.
