This video will concentrate on applying the crisis response plan (CRP) with at-risk persons to manage acute suicide risk. The existing evidence base supporting the use of the CRP with veterans and active-duty military groups will be reviewed. Time will be spent studying specific ways for completing a patient-centered narrative assessment for measuring suicide risk, as well as developing a personalized crisis response plan that prioritizes self-management measures that the patient may self-implement to minimize overall risk.
Dr. Justin Baker is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at OSUMC and the Clinical Director of the Suicide and Trauma Reduction Initiative for Veterans, a research and clinical treatment program that prioritizes evidence-based treatments for veterans, first responders, and their family members. He is a clinical psychologist and military veteran whose research focuses on developing therapies for posttraumatic stress disorder and suicide prevention among military personnel and veterans. He is currently the project lead on several federally funded studies, including a suicide risk reduction peer mentoring program that teaches peer mentors how to implement crisis response plans (CRP), a suicide prevention intervention that has been shown to reduce suicide attempts by 76%, with at-risk peers within their military unit. Dr. Baker also serves as a national consultant and trainer for CRP and Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (BCBT), two evidence-based suicide prevention therapies, and is the main investigator on a clinical trial adapting BCBT for telemedicine services.
