Global Trauma Project (GTP), located in Kenya, works with local changemakers all around the globe to enhance trauma-informed programming that is accessible, culturally appropriate, and has been shown to have a major impact. The presenters will highlight their experiences with Trauma-Informed Community Empowerment (TICE), GTP’s evidence-based framework that allows for fidelity to effective mental health interventions while also being adaptable to local circumstances. TICE, as an adaptive, contextualized foundation, increases the ability of community providers, who are frequently put in jeopardy since they are under stress themselves and serve populations afflicted by compounded stress, complex trauma, and historical injustice.
Confronting oppressive structures throughout global mental health is central to the GTP process. Speakers will examine how deconstructing power and privilege, especially the idea of whiteness, may liberate not just those who are oppressed, but also those who possess power, whether knowingly or subconsciously.
Finally, this workshop will expose attendees to the TICE Framework’s basic principles and how they have been used to important GTP programming initiatives such as preventing violent extremism, decreasing sexual/gender-based violence, and supporting youth development. Case studies from Kenya, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the United States will demonstrate TICE’s use in program evaluation, staff assistance, curriculum design, training, mentorship, and supervision.
