Reporting China on the Rise investigates the internal and external factors affecting the work of foreign journalists in China during Xi Jinping’s term, drawing on the structural-constructivist framework of journalistic field and habitus.
This research includes the results of numerous surveys and interviews with current and retired Chinese reporters. It seeks to investigate how they have responded to, and continue to adapt to, influences from inside the journalistic profession (such as a changing media sector), as well as continual developments in global geopolitics and China’s increasingly restricted journalistic environment. These elements are demonstrated to interact to relationally define these reporters’ news production practices and, ultimately, form the final news output.
Journalism in modern China has become a hotly debated yet woefully under-researched issue among policymakers and scholars alike. Reporting China on the Rise aims to spark debate on the role of the foreign press in producing relevant media coverage of this rising powerhouse. It will be an excellent resource for journalism and media studies students and academics.
