Kosen Judo is a branch of Kodokan Judo, or was one at one point. Initially, it was a set of methods developed by the Kodokan Judo to cope with representatives from other martial arts schools in public tournaments. Nothing about Kosen Judo was unique to the Kodokan Judo system, but its attitude to combat was radically different. Kosen Judo concentrated on fighting on the ground rather than standing combat tactics.
Initially, Kodokan and Kosen Judo were fairly close, and people who practiced Kodokan Judo could easily transition to Kosen Judo, but these styles progressively drifted apart.
Many Kosen Judo techniques are no longer accepted by Kodokan Judo.
Kodokan Judo became a strictly sporting combat, an Olympic discipline unfit for a genuine fight.
Because of his obscurity, Kosen Judo is practically forgotten and is now only taught in Japanese institutions.
