What You’ll Learn in These 7 Weeks
The course meets on Thursdays at Noon Pacific.
Matthew will walk you through the core ideas and traits of Spiritual Warriorship throughout this 7-week transformative intensive. Each weekly LIVE reflection and training session will build on the one before it. You’ll get a comprehensive grasp of the techniques, methods, and concepts that will allow you to combine the Divine Feminine and Sacred Masculine inside yourself and fully unleash your abilities in service to the world.
Module 1: What is a Spiritual Warrior? (September 7)
The Sufi Mystic Hafiz honors the Spiritual Warrior who remains in our life amid the gloomy moments known in our culture as the Dark Night of the Soul (and what we may also refer to as the “Dark Night of Our Species”). A fighter does not flee, fall into denial, or succumb to addictions.
In this first session, you’ll look at Hafiz’s teachings as well as those of Meister Eckhart, Joanna Macy, and others who speak of cultivating the mystic warrior or prophet who, as Rabbi Heschel says, isn’t afraid to “interfere.”
You will learn:
What mystical traditions have to say about the Dark Night
The worth of the Dark Night when faced sensibly
The Spiritual Warrior archetype and your ability to cultivate inner strength and bravery
Teachings from mystic Meister Eckhart and Buddhist teacher Joanna Macy can aid in the development of the Spiritual Warrior.
Module 2: The Sacred Masculine’s Origins (September 14)
Father Sky, the Green Man, the Blue Man, the Hunter Gatherer, and other archetypes that are rarely addressed in a patriarchal society are “spiritual springs” that can nourish a healthy and sacred masculinity. Defining masculinity in terms of the reptilian brain (being number one and dominating others) rather than cooperation benefits empires but not the planet or deepening human relationships, which is one of the Sacred Masculine’s gifts.
You will learn:
The development of Father Sky’s Sacred Masculine archetype
The development of the Green Man’s Sacred Masculine archetype
The development of the Blue Man’s Sacred Masculine archetype
The development of the Hunter Gatherer Sacred Masculine archetype
Practices for cultivating these archetypes in yourself and others
The Inner Mystic, Module 3
Your Sacred Masculine Foundation (September 21)
According to Hafiz, one can become a sacred warrior “only if you and God become sweet lovers.” This implies that a warrior must be a mystic, because the mystic in us is a lover. A lover of the earth, life, animals, beauty, health, children, unborn children, poems, music, and all of creation. How do the mystic poets lead us to such love?
Here, we invoke mystics like Mary Oliver, Thomas Merton, Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Berry, and others who ignite the fire of mysticism within all of us. This reawakening of eros is at the heart of the Sacred Masculine’s return.
You will learn:
How we are all mystics, and how YOU can grow in your mysticism
Contemporary mystic teachings that can awaken your inner mystic
Pre-modern mystic teachings that can confirm and deepen your own mysticism
The return of the Sacred Masculine as a condition for mystical awakening
Module 4: The Divine Feminine and Sacred Masculine’s Sacred Marriage (September 28)
Dorothy Soelle and Father Bede Griffiths, theologians, associate mysticism with the Divine Feminine. Exploring the Divine Feminine connects to the Sacred Masculine.
In this session, Matthew will lead you through the works of Meister Eckhart and Adrienne Rich, Julian of Norwich and M.C. Richards, Clarissa Pinkola Estes and Hildegard of Bingen, the Wild Woman as practiced by Clarissa Pinkola Estes and Hildegard of Bingen, the marriage of the Green Man and the Black Madonna, and other mystics and myths.
You will learn:
Why, according to wise people, the return of the Divine Feminine spells the return of mysticism.
How women poets and philosophers like Adrienne Rich and M.C. Richards awaken the meaning of deep feminism within us.
The Divine Feminine teachings of Meister Eckhart and Thomas Merton
How to Participate in the Divine Feminine and Sacred Masculine Marriage
Module 5: Taking on Evil Powers (October 5)
Religion in the West has oversold sin, necessitating the development of a new language for comprehending and debating the presence of evil in our lives and society. According to psychologist M. Scott Peck, our language about evil is at a “primitive” stage.
Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society, by Matthew Fox, proposes a new language born of combining Eastern teachings about the seven chakras with Western teachings about the seven capital sins. Deepak Chopra refers to evil as “the number one spiritual issue for the twenty-first century” in the foreword to this book.
Developing your Sacred Masculine powers alongside your Divine Feminine energy can prepare you to face evil and do something constructive about it.
You will learn:
A new language derived from the East and West in order to discuss and debate evil.
How the 7 East Chakras correspond to power centers in your body and mind
How the 7 Western capital sins correspond to the chakras when they are off-center
How sin differs from evil while opening the door to it
How can you stand firm against evil forces in society and within yourself?
Module 6: Creativity at the Crossroads of the Divine and Human (October 12) (Pre-recorded)
We co-create with the spirit of creation, according to pre-modern thinkers and mystics such as Thomas Aquinas, Hildegard of Bingen, and Meister Eckhart. Anthropology today assumes that the very definition of a human being is a “bi-ped who makes things.”
Is our society prioritizing creativity in our educational and religious communities? So why not? What is preventing us from moving forward? How can human creativity help to heal and address the major issues confronting our species today? Where does our imagination come from? How do we get back in touch with it? How do we let that creativity out? How do we make the transition from disempowerment to empowerment?
You will learn:
Your creative sources
How your creativity (developing the Blue Man within you) is a de facto Spirit experience, as mystics teach.
How can you use your creativity for good or evil?
Methods for releasing your creativity and transitioning from disempowerment to empowerment
Module 7: The Return of Hope and the Recovery of the Sacred (October 19)
Hope is not optimism; it is hard work, both inside and outside, confronting injustice and evil in and around us.
This work necessitates the rediscovery of the sacred space in which you exist and move. It necessitates fully awakening the mystic within, nurturing your inner warrior or prophet… and it necessitates the Sacred Marriage of the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Masculine within an awe-inspiring cosmology.
In this final session, you’ll look at modern prophets like Naomi Klein, Scott Sanders, Howard Thurman, Thomas Berry, Joanna Macy, and others who bring hope to life and have deepened and usefully developed the Spiritual Warrior.
You will learn:
How to Restore Your Sense of the Sacred
Why, even in the face of adversity, despair and denial do not have the final say
How contemporary mystic warriors and prophets like Naomi Klein and Scott Sanders, Howard Thurman and Joanna Macy, and others are urging us on.
These prophets’ teachings that interfere with despair, denial, and addictions
How David Orr’s “sleeves-rolled-up” definition of hope can reawaken the Sacred Masculine while reconnecting it to the Divine Feminine in life and practice.
