Finance can be found everywhere, from our retirement savings to our investments in housing and education. Despite this, many bright people find finance intimidating. The great majority of people who work on Main Street rather than Wall Street are unfamiliar with fundamental terms such as insurance, leverage, risk, value creation, acquisitions, and bankruptcies.
The 2008 financial crisis demonstrated that a greater understanding of how markets work would benefit us all. Finance, all too often, is taught in boring, technical, or jargon-filled ways.
Mihir Desai has arrived. He is a Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School professor who is on a mission to bring the humanities and finance together. In his book, The Wisdom of Finance: Discovering Humanity in the World of Risk and Return, Professor Desai approaches financial subjects from a humanities perspective. He’ll teach you the most important financial concepts in this course by using literary stories from Pride and Prejudice, the Maltese Falcon, and the Bible.
This is not a personal finance course.
It will instead be a colorful, story-based tour of important financial topics. You will be able to properly discuss important financial ideas, analyze financial news items, and recognize financial concepts in everyday life at the end of this course. Rather from being intimidating, the core practices of money are all around us and have been ingrained in our stories for centuries.
