Murray Halam – Aquaponics The First 12 Months
What makes it even more fascinating is that it is about our Ecofilms system. We chose to record its construction from start to finish and capture its positive and poor aspects over the duration of 6 months – the important period for Aquaponics systems as they grow – when it was built over a year ago.
That period spanned the summer, autumn, and winter, and we decided to wait and track its progress over the entire 12-month period, with Murray Hallam inspecting the system every month or so and commenting on how it was progressing.
Our knowledge of aquaponics was limited, and we wanted to learn how an aquaponics system develops in the same way that a new user would – the ups and downs of running an aquaponics system from start to finish. The finish line was the part where you actually catch and eat your fish, something we hadn’t planned on doing. We never anticipated our fish to grow larger than the size of a goldfish when we originally bought them. They did, however, expand. We also wanted to give a true representation of what it was like to do something with no prior experience of fish raising or plant cultivation. If all of the fish perished, the narrative would come to an end. We planned to record our system’s progress and incorporate it as a rolling part on the Aquaponics Secrets DVD. But when we were filming the Secrets video, we realized that this was a whole different narrative. It had its own momentum. The fish were all thriving. The plants just sprang out of the growbeds like they were on steroids – it was an incredible sight.
We were able to grow items that we had never grown before or that were difficult to cultivate. Broccoli and other vegetables You stuck a seedling into the growbed and that was that. The system just took over. A month or two later – up came the broccoli floret. No pesticides or sprays needed. This Aquaponics thing really does work well! No wonder people that had a system like this were addicted. So we kept filming our system as the months rolled on.
Eventually we had enough material to make a great documentary. One that would work best on its own as a separate title. It had never been our intention to film our system as a separate title – but this is what happened – and the journey was well worth the wait.
At this stage we aren’t sure whether to release it as a DVD title or digital download file. Maybe both. Let us know if you’d prefer to watch it online. Murray is a fantastic presenter and this title really shows the evolution of an aquaponics system from start to finish. At the end of 12 months – we felt like experts!
