Provocative Therapy Improvisation

I was very perplexed when I first saw Frank Farrelly in action teaching provocative treatment. I have a background in NLP, and this made no sense to me from that standpoint. Yes, I could see hints of what I had studied in NLP, but there was so much going on on so many levels that it was difficult to keep track of everything at first. I was interested by the Provocative Therapy approach, and Frank was clearly at ease as a therapist effortlessly shifting the client’s thinking. This was a whole new level of competence that made the co-creators of BLP appear very clumsy in their methods of operation. Frank was a terrific therapist and genuine trailblazer. He never actually defined the process in depth, leaving it up to the students to observe and listen during the interviews or demonstrations. Only afterwards did I see the genius and accuracy of the provocative approach. The ability of the practitioner to work impromptu is essential to stimulating treatment. This means that the practitioner works exclusively in the present moment, reacting to the client’s verbal and nonverbal replies. Any learner interested in studying the art of provocation would benefit significantly from knowing the rules of improvisation, which are outlined here.
1. Accept everything (no blockage) 2. Add direction 3. Be assertive 4. Add energy and drama
5. Maintain a good attitude and a sense of humor.
6. Tell rather than ask 7. Don’t attempt to be amusing
8. Don’t attempt to be unique.
This entails dealing with clients in a fundamentally different manner and avoiding the predetermined set piece procedures that are common in other therapy systems. This means that the practitioner must be completely at ease with oneself when working in clinical settings. The practitioner’s “manner” is just as significant as what they accomplish in the session.
I utilize the PCW card method to provide pupils true flexibility while teaching controversial skills. The practitioner can take one of 27 fundamental postures, each of which has a distinct impact. Frank was a natural improviser with a passion for music, and in my experience, folks who respond to the provocative approach frequently have a passion for music and movies.
In 2018, I’ll be teaching students in the United States, Japan, Europe, and online through the 1 – 1 Skype program. A significant part of this will be learning how to improvise and simply respond to the customer during the session rather than deciding what you’re going to do ahead of time!
