“Kali Means to Scrape” took two years to complete: Nick “Pappydog” Papadakis, an AFI graduate, traveled to the Philippines to chronicle the art of Kali. They were able to capture the ambience of the art and culture with the aid of Canadian filmmaker Ron Gabriel. Nick traveled to the Negros Occidentales’ barrios and jungles to meet the masters of the craft. He was also able to use the painting to tell various stories about real-life clashes. The music in the piece is all original music compiled by our Music Supervisor, drummer extraordinaire Phillip “Fish” Fisher of Fishbone and Justin Timberlake fame. In addition to Helios Jive, Deploi, and many others. Traditional guitar works are interspersed with Hip Hop, Jazz, Classical, and Trip Hop. Kali Means to Scrape is the first documentary of its sort to investigate the origins of eskrima and its impact on Philippine and American cultures. This is as authentic as it gets, written by Ron Gabriel and Nick Papadakis and shot on location in rural locations of the Philippines. Watch as you are led into the jungles and towns of the Philippines under heavy guard to chat with numerous indigenous about what Kali is and how it affects their lives and culture. Discover how genuine stick fighters train, live, and survive with eskrima. Learn about the bravery, savagery, and compassion of those who battle with swords. Finally, a documentary that gives the art and its people credit. You will find this as intriguing as its inhabitants, regardless of your skill level or style.
