Shoji Nishio Sensei is a unique aikido instructor who incorporates components from his significant expertise in judo, karate, iaido, and jojutsu in his martial-oriented interpretation of aikido. As part of his complete system, Nishio Sensei has also created a complicated sequence of bokken, jo, and iaido versions of essential techniques.

Part one of a thorough exposition of shomenuchi techniques is part three of the Nishio Aikido video series. Nishio Sensei shows side-escape techniques before explaining shihonage, ikkyo, gokyo, irimi, and kotegaeshi. All of the moves are demonstrated while holding nothing except the ken and jo.
The second phase of the presentation of shomenuchi techniques is presented in Part 4 of the Nishio Aikido videotape series. Numerous side-entry techniques, such as irimi, kotegaeshi, and nikyo, are covered; the furikaburi series covers irimi, kotegaeshi, and sankyo. Finally, several techniques are illustrated.
