Course Description

The clinical significance of patients suffering from cranial nerve neuropathies encompass the spectrum from debilitating pain to muscular and visceral dysfunction. The neuropathic pathogenesis may be of an organic or teratogenic nature, but frequently it can be a consequence of significant trauma that compromises anatomical structure, thus lending itself to an integrated osteopathic approach in patient care. Osteopathic medical curriculum has long observed the importance of facile clinical knowledge of the cranial nerves. However, the complexity of the subject matter, evolving anatomical explorations/neurologic mapping, and an underappreciated cranial nerve Osteopathic perspective, lends the subject ripe for review. Additionally, practiced cranial nerve physical examination skills are a requirement in sensitively observing clinical cranial nerve dysfunction.

This three hour virtual course is designed to systematically introduce and review significant cranial nerve:

• anatomical and functional considerations
• respective physical examination skills
• applied osteopathic perspectives and treatments within the model of Osteopathy in the Cranial Field
• clinical correlations

By the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

• list the 13 cranial nerves by name and function
• identify common clinical presentations and their associations to specific cranial nerves
• identify anatomical entrapment locations that lend themselves to osteopathic considerations and treatment

Target Audience

This activity is open for all osteopathic and medical physicians (DO/MD), Dentist (DDS/DMD), Medical Student (DO/MD), and International Osteopaths.

Prerequisites

Approved (OPC/OCA/SCTF) 40-hour Introduction to Osteopathy in the Cranial Field course. Please email proof of completion of an approved course from OPC, OCA or SCTF to [email protected].

COURSE DIRECTOR DO, COMP, 1998. Undergraduate OMM Fellowship. Dr. R. Mitchell Hiserote D.O. is a California native living in the bay area and presently holds the position of Associate Professor at the Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine – Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Department. As an active lecturer within the OMM department as well as across the Universities’ other colleges, he contributes to curriculum creation and delivery, recruitment, and the admission process generously. He is an alumnus of Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine of Pomona CA where he additionally completed an Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Recently as a Costin scholar from the Midwestern University – Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, he holds a board certification in Neuromusculoskeletal & Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine from the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromuscular Medicine. His clinical sites of traditional Osteopathic private practices have included San Diego, Santa Cruz, Sebastopol, and Fresno California. Until recently he has seen patients at the Touro University Medical Clinic in Vallejo, CA. Dr. Hiserote has directed and made many presentations in Basic Cranial Courses for more than 15 years.
