Paul Vunak is the creator of Progressive Fighting Systems and a California-based martial artist (PFS).
By the age of fourteen, he had earned his first black belt in Taekwondo.
Paul began to experiment with various techniques, including Kenpo and Hung Gar (Tiger Crane) Gung Fu.
He gained another black belt after three years (in Kenpo).
The school where Paul trained Kenpo dissolved in August 1976, and he enrolled in Dan Inosanto’s Filipino Kali Academy, where he earned the status of Full Instructor in Jeet Kune Do/Kali in July 1988.
Vunak’s form of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is known as Progressive Fighting Systems.
It is often recognized as an excellent street method due to its concentration on headbutts, knees, and elbows delivered from trapping range (most notably, the clinch).
These tactics serve as the foundation for the system’s Rapid Assault Tactics (RAT) program.
Typically, stick and knife skills drawn from the Filipino martial art of Kali are also taught.
Vunak emphasizes that Jeet Kune Do is about developing efficient combat and better qualities, not superior technique.
He claims that in martial arts, there is no greater technique, simply superior training methods.
JKD methods, according to Vunak, are derived from a variety of martial disciplines.
The idea is to utilize a technique for a limited length of time until the range or scenario changes and necessitates a better technique (perhaps from another art); even the characteristic Wing Chun straight blast and headbutt techniques are only to be used for as long as the situation permits.
Vunak says that range determines the result of fighting and that no single art has a monopoly on all ranges.
JKD takes techniques, training methods, and even concepts from many martial arts.
He believes that employing several arts is vital because one must be able to adjust to the stoppage of one method and flow into the next.
While many martial artists claim to have been invited to teach military personnel, Paul Vunak has been hired to instruct special operations organizations and law enforcement officers, most notably SEAL Team Six.
He has developed and starred in a huge number of self-defense movies and DVDs[1] aimed at quick self-defense skill acquisition.
Many of them promote the same training that the SEALs and other military and law enforcement forces get.
They are designed for fast absorption using the RAT System.
He has also produced DVDs on Jeet Kune Do and published books and articles on the subject.
