I just believe it’s a foolish anthropomorphism that psychologists have made people overthink.
People feel good and horrible at times, and it’s not always a good or negative thing; there are certain things that should terrify the snot out of you.
If you consider cheating on your wife, you should be terrified. If your blood pressure is so high and your glycerine count is through the sky and somebody brings you butter to put on your toast you should go oh wait a minute.
So feeling awful isn’t necessarily a negative thing; it’s when you feel horrible about the images in your brain about things you haven’t done and group them together and term it “self esteem,” you’re not addressing things you can do anything with.
It’s all a metaphor.
They are concerned that children would feel horrible about themselves because they did not pass a spelling exam.
What you should do is circle the correct words and disregard the incorrect ones. I attempt to encourage people to focus on what they achieve and feel good about it, and to ignore the rest. We spend 12 to 16 years in school, and they point out every mistake we make, which is not how the human brain is built to learn. You have to learn to disregard misspelled words, and when I taught college, I got in trouble because all I gave were A’s and incompletes, and people would complain because it was a test, how could it be incomplete? And I’d say, “Well, you don’t have all the proper answers,” and then I’d give them the exam and tell them to go acquire the correct answers.
So they have to ask someone or look them up, but now they’re actively looking for the solution rather than forgetting what they should know.
It’s not a question of going I’m not good at this, I’m not good that and I’m not good at this.
Instead of penalizing individuals for what doesn’t work, we should start praising what does.
