Regarding the Actor
Robert A. Johnson, D. Hum., was born in Portland, Oregon in 1921. He attended the University of Oregon and Stanford University before moving to Los Angeles to study under Fritz Kunkel. This finally led to his studying at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, under Emma Jung. Later, he worked under Tony Sussman in London, England. In the early 1950s, Robert started an analytical practice with Helen Luke in Los Angeles, California, and became a father to her two young sons at the same time. Robert quit his busy analytical practice after Helen’s youngest was successfully launched to attend a Benedictine monastery in Michigan. After four years, he left the monastery to found Saint Johns House, a retreat facility where he specialized in the synthesis of Christianity and C. G. Jung’s work. Robert was a resident speaker at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Diego for almost 10 years, collaborating with its priest, Jack Sanford, to build a bridge between orthodox Christianity and depth psychology. Robert’s fascination in mythology led him to India in 1973, where he began studying the major Hindu Epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. He eventually dropped out of school to spend more time meeting friends and immersing himself in the Eastern world. For more than two decades, Robert visited India on a yearly basis. Many of the people he met became close friends with him. Robert traveled extensively around India, but he liked to spend the large bulk of his time in the southeastern beach city of Pondicherry. The Religious Publishing Company of Pennsylvania released one of Robert’s lectures under the title HE! in 1974. When this modest publisher was bought by HarperCollins, Robert became a best-selling author, and his works eventually reached millions of people. Robert is currently mostly retired from writing, traveling, and speaking, preferring to care to his garden and spend time with friends.
