Rock and roll (sometimes spelled rock & roll, rock ‘n’ roll, or rock ‘n roll) is a popular music genre that emerged in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Gospel, jump blues, jazz, boogie woogie, rhythm and blues, and country music all contributed to its development.

While aspects of rock & roll may be heard on blues and country albums from the 1920s and 1930s, the genre did not receive its name until 1954.

According to journalist Greg Kot, “rock and roll” refers to a popular music style that originated in the United States in the 1950s. By the mid-1960s, rock and roll had evolved into “the more inclusive worldwide style known as rock music,” albeit it was still referred to as rock and roll. This article focuses on the first definition for the sake of difference.

The piano or saxophone was usually the principal instrument in the early rock and roll forms. In the mid to late 1950s, guitar typically replaced or augmented these instruments. The beat is primarily a dancing rhythm with an emphasized backbeat, which is nearly typically produced by a snare drum. One or two electric guitars (one lead, one rhythm) and a double bass are typically used to play classic rock & roll (string bass). Electric bass guitars and drum sets were prominent in classic rock after the mid-1950s.

Rock & roll had a divisive impact on dress, attitudes, and language. It is frequently portrayed in films, fan publications, and on television. Rock & roll may have aided the civil rights struggle since it was loved by both African American and White American adolescents.
