Unfortunately, many of our inborn responses to physical and mental anguish only serve to compound our woes and ensnare us in never-ending circles of misery. In this workshop, we will learn how to be fully present with pain in order to break these loops and avoid needless suffering. When both the therapist and the patient are more open to responding to pain in a way that prioritizes flexibility over control and avoidance, a therapeutic presence emerges.

For almost 25 years, Dr. Ronald D. Siegel has served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. He has been practicing mindfulness meditation for years and is now on the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy’s Board of Directors and teaching staff. Working for many years in community mental health with inner city children and families, he now maintains a private clinical practice in Lincoln, Massachusetts, where he also lectures about mindfulness, psychotherapy, and mind/body treatment. Dr. Siegel is the co-author of Back Sense, a self-treatment guide that combines Western and Eastern approaches to the treatment of chronic back pain, as well as the co-editor of the widely praised professional text Mindfulness and Psychotherapy and the author of the new, comprehensive guide for general audiences.
