Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is the ultimate grappler, with a world-class ground game as well as an incredible stand-up takedown game. He is a BJJ and Judo black belt who began his training at the ASLE academy with his first instructor, Henrique Machado. Contrary to common assumption, Jacare did not come from a traditional Judo background where one would begin training in Judo and then progress to BJJ (Saulo Ribeiro for example). At ASLE academy, he was usually practicing BJJ and Judo at the same time with Machado, who believed in his students having a full game. BJJ was always his top focus.
Souza was born in Vila Velha, Brazil, reared in Cariacica, Brazil, and played football as a goalie until the age of 15. Souza had a difficult life, and on the day he turned 15, he saw the murder of one of his close friends. Souza’s mother transferred him to Manaus to live with his brother after this tragedy, and when he was 17, he began training in Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He is a five-time World Jiu-Jitsu Champion, with Openweight gold medals in 2003, 2004 and 2005. His other accomplishments include becoming the 2005 ADCC 77-87 kg Champion and the 2005 ADCC Absolute Division runner-up, losing only to Roger Gracie, who outweighed him by nearly 25 lbs. Souza, along with Roger Gracie and Marcelo Garcia, is widely regarded as one of the best BJJ practitioners of all time.
