Nursing Litigation TrendsJessica enrolled in a nursing school with excellent teachers and internship opportunities. “If you don’t document, you’ll be in trouble,” she’d always heard. Nobody understood what that meant. Her preceptor instructed her how to document the unit requirements at her orientation as a new graduate and assured her that writing anything more was a waste of time. Jessica never questioned the situation. Jessica was thinking at this point in her career, “I don’t bother much about charting; the computer takes care of it.” I can sleep well as long as I keep track of what my unit audits for.”
After two years… Jessica sat at the deposition table quietly, her head dropped low, and she hadn’t slept in months. She was sworn in after they asked her to speak and spell her name for the court reporter. “Do you swear to speak the complete truth and nothing but the truth?” ”
This might happen to you if it happened to Jessica. But how did this occur? How did Jessica’s chart become a deposition proceeding? How could this happen to any competent nurse?
