SAP Quality Management Overview (QM)
Quality Management (QM) is an essential component of logistics, and it is completely integrated into the SAP system with complementing components such as Materials Management (MM), Plant Maintenance (PM), and Production Planning (PP). Quality management is critical in the warehouse, where incoming material is examined as it arrives, as well as in manufacturing processes, where in-process products are inspected during the production process and finished goods are reviewed before they reach the warehouse.

The QM module is divided into three sections: planning, notifications, and inspections. The quality planning tool enables your quality department to schedule inspections for vendor goods receipts, production, work in process, and stock transfers. A quality notice can be used to request that the quality department take action. This might be to look into an internal problem, an issue with vendor products, or a consumer complaint. The physical inspection of quality is performed in accordance with the requirements set in quality planning.
Planning
The quality inspection plans in SAP outline how an item will be examined. The plan also outlines how the inspection is to take place, the item characteristics to be tested and all the relevant test equipment that is needed for the inspection.
The inspection plan is an essential component of the QM planning process. The plan specifies which aspects of the item are to be inspected in each operation as well as the type of test equipment necessary for the inspection.
Notifications
The quality notice documents an issue that has been found by a customer against a product manufactured by your firm or by your company against a vendor’s product. An internal notice can also be issued to notify a quality concern that has occurred on the production line or elsewhere in the facility. You can establish a new order for a specific quality notification by assigning it to an existing QM order.
Inspections
A quality inspection takes place when a member of the quality department inspects an item based on the inspection planning functionality. A lot is a request to check a specific object, and an inspection is based on one or more inspection lots. The SAP system may generate inspection lots either manually or automatically. An automated inspection lot can be triggered by a variety of situations. Most inspection lots are triggered automatically by a material movement, such as a goods receipt or a goods problem. However, other events such as the formation or release of a manufacturing order, the creation of deliveries, or a stock transfer in the warehouse.
The inspection lot capability enables for a product examination in the warehouse. The product might be a finished product, a raw material, or a piece of facility equipment. When an inspection is carried out, the results should be noted for each of the inspection features. If the inspection shows that the findings do not meet the stipulated standard for a given attribute, the inspection lot might be accepted as being within tolerance or rejected.
When the examination for the inspection lot is completed, a decision on whether the material may be accepted or refused can be made. The inspection is technically closed after the quality department has made a usage decision.
Reporting
SAP offers the quality management team with a number of reports. The material defects report might reveal how many times an item has been marked as defective. The frequency of failed material per vendor is shown in the vendor defect report. By checking inspection lots for goods receipts, a quality department can spotlight vendors who are selling items that consistently fail inspection. The customer defect report details the flaws discovered during outbound delivery inspections. This is significant since it may aid in the resolution of issues, which will increase customer happiness and service.
