DescriptionWhat does addiction resemble? Someone who is untidy, filthy, and down on their luck? Unshaven and disheveled; sitting on the sidewalk with a bottle in hand? You probably didn’t picture a well-dressed lawyer in the courtroom.
Many persons who struggle with substance abuse do not meet the stereotypes. They successfully balance their personal and work life. Teachers, attorneys, and physicians are all examples of professionals. Hidden in plain sight, these “functional addicts” are dependable at work, well-liked by coworkers, and frequently the epitome of success.
However, addiction is never functional. People who “function” with a drug use disorder have only avoided obvious disaster. They are still in active addiction, simply waiting for the bottom to fall out.
They require treatment, but treating high-functioning people is difficult. Intense denial is a formidable impediment to treatment. Clients’ avoidance, including shame, keeps them from confronting their addiction and fuels their defensiveness. Anxiety, depression, and trauma frequently co-exist as volatile partners to addiction, and if untreated, will almost certainly lead to relapse. Taking into account all of these interconnected factors makes treatment planning difficult and complex.
Purchase today to learn how to assist these “hidden in plain sight” clients in confronting their addiction, breaking through their denial, and putting an end to their silent suffering!
