This training lesson discusses depression rates in the civilian, military, and veteran populations, as well as the prevalence and causes of depression. There is discussion of the stigma linked with depressive disorders. There are strategies for screening and measuring depression, as well as particular psychometric measures. Treatments for depression are administered in accordance with the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines, with an emphasis on Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy. Finally, a brief summary of the six VA/DoD approved treatment procedures is provided, along with information and resources for gaining more in-depth knowledge and training.

OBJECTIVES OF LEARNING: Inform the military population about the incidence of depression. Describe the harmful repercussions of the stigma attached to depression. Evaluate options for screening and diagnosing depression in military clientele. Distinguish between successful therapy for treating military customers who are depressed.

Sharon Birman, Psy.D., is a CBT trainer with the Military Training Programs at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) in Bethesda, Maryland. She joined the CDP in 2014, following a postdoctoral position at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she was active in CBT and DBT intervention, supervision, and education. She finished her predoctoral internship at Didi Hirsch Mental Health Center, where she focused on suicide prevention and evidence-based strategies for the treatment of people with severe, persistent mental illness.
Dr. Birman holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Southern California, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University.
Her professional interests include severe and chronic mental illness intervention and treatment planning, suicide prevention, social justice, multicultural and diversity concerns in therapy. She has undergone extensive CBT and DBT training in a number of settings, including hospitals, community mental health facilities, Veterans Affairs, and an applied research lab. Among other therapeutic modalities, she has received training in Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP). She is trained in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST), and Brief Crisis Intervention (BRC).
