A sniper in the United States Army is a specially trained volunteer with exceptional marksmanship and fieldcraft abilities. He may assist special operations missions and engage chosen targets from covert positions at ranges and under situations that the average rifleman cannot. The sniper’s talent functions as a force multiplier, with a dual mission: (1) to remove high-value tactical targets on the battlefield, and (2) to operate as an observer gathering intelligence. Field Manual 23-10 contains doctrine on the Sniper’s mission, people, organization, equipment, training, abilities, and employment. This document is for commanders, staffs, instructors, and troops in training stations, US Army schools, and units. FM 23-10 targets three distinct groups: •\sCommanders. It outlines the nature, role, candidate selection, organization, and employment of sniper troops. •\sTrainers. It serves as a resource for creating training programs. •\sSnipers. It offers thorough information about snipers’ core knowledge, abilities, and employment practices over the whole operating spectrum.
