Description
Following the arrest of Rodney King, Jr. in Los Angeles in 1991, police agencies around the United States launched a new era of policing. I recall this because I joined the police academy that June. That episode, and dozens like it around the country, gave rise to a new phrase in police enforcement known as De Escalation. Verbal Judo was the initial wave of training and thinking process for de-escalating potentially violent interactions, but by 2000 or shortly afterwards, it had simply become the word de-escalation.
A little more than a decade later, the prosecution of George Zimmerman in the Trayvon Martin killing introduced the phrase de-escalation to the public, especially concealed carry permit holders, and it was no longer a term restricted to police enforcement.
Since then, we’ve witnessed a number of incidents in which de-escalation may have spared one life while preventing another from being condemned to life in jail. We recently discussed the Kaarma and Smith cases on our site, and we will be discussing others, such as the Wafer and Gasser cases, in the coming months.
In this course, we will discuss de-escalation, what it is, and some of the strategies taught to police enforcement to be utilized in potentially violent interactions, as well as how those skills may be employed if you are a concealed carrying or carry in self-defense. This course has more than 20 minutes of video content.
You will be able to print a certificate of completion once you have completed this course.
