This lecture will discuss the elements that influence airflow in a child’s upper airway. There will also be a discussion of the current ways of diagnosing sleep issues in children. Finally, a discussion of the various techniques to addressing OSA in children will take place.
Objectives of Learning:
The learner will have accomplished the following by the end of this presentation: Be able to define the elements that influence airflow in a child’s upper airway. Be able to describe current ways of detecting sleep abnormalities and respiratory problems in children. Be able to outline several techniques to managing OSA in children.
Dr. Sheldon is a Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and the Director of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago’s Sleep Medicine Center. He is actively involved in pediatric sleep medicine clinical practice, as well as in pediatric sleep medicine teaching and research.
He received his medical degree from Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and his pediatrics residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He also completed a faculty fellowship in Sleep Disorders Medicine at the University of Chicago and a visiting faculty fellowship in Medical Education at Southern Illinois University Medical School. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatrics and the American Board of Sleep Medicine in Sleep Medicine.
Dr. Sheldon has served the profession in a variety of roles, including as a primary care pediatrics consultant to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS). He has also served on several professional boards.
Dr. Sheldon is the author of Pediatric Differential Diagnosis (Raven Press 1979), Pediatric Sleep Medicine (WB Saunders 1992), Evaluating Sleep in Infants and Children (Lippincott-Raven 1995), Atlas of Sleep Medicine in Infants and Children (Futura Publishers 2000), and Differential Diagnosis in Sleep Medicine (Futura Publisher). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the premier textbook for the medical profession on diagnosing (Elsevier, in preparation). Dr. Sheldon is also a co-editor of the work Allergy and Sleep: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice, Springer Publishers, 2020.
Dr. Sheldon states that Jazz Pharmaceuticals funded his research. Idorsia Pharmaceuticals paid him a consulting fee. He was also compensated for his work as a topic author for Up-to-Date.
