Steven Hayes – ACT in Action 2 – Control and Acceptance
ACT creator Stephen Hayes, PhD, explains the notion of accepting what we cannot control while working with a client who suffers from severe social anxiety. Though his client feels that removing his anxiety is the route to freedom, Hayes teaches him that he may never be able to erase his anxiety since he cannot control his inner world. Instead, he has the option of accepting it without resistance and living in line with his greatest personal beliefs.
However, there is a risk of sliding too fast into what Hayes refers to as “pseudo-acceptance,” as we observe in the next session with a teacher suffering from panic disorder. With Hayes’ intelligent analysis, you’ll learn to recognize the warning signals and manage this stumbling block with your own customers.
Then, in a moving session with a depressed mother, Hayes explains the traditional notion of cognitive defusion, which he uses to help his client detach from her thoughts and engage more completely in treatment.
