How much time do you waste asking, “How do I know whether I’m working on the appropriate goal?”

The Secrets That The Most Successful People Share
Steve Jobs called Mark Parker after he was named CEO of Nike. The two had previously collaborated, and Jobs had called to congratulate Mark on his new position. Mark responded by asking Jobs for guidance.
Jobs immediately said no and then stopped. He exhaled deeply and stated that Nike produces some of the top things in the world. Products that you desire. But you also produce a lot of garbage.”
“Just get rid of the bad stuff and concentrate on the good stuff.
Another silence ensued. Parker was expecting a chuckle.
It never arrived.
In a subsequent interview, when asked what accomplishment he was most proud of, Jobs stated that he was equally happy of what Apple did not do as he was of what it achieved.
When a reporter asked Warren Buffett, If you were to break down your key to success to one concept what would it be?
Buffet said that for every 100 possibilities presented to him, he says no 99 times.
That doesn’t only mean no to investment or acquisition prospects, he clarified. It is a firm no to any request for his time or attention.
The secret of Jobs and Buffett was not a complicated, opaque organizational system or a clever management approach.
It was relentlessly focusing on the few, vital items and removing everything else.
They picked goals that were significant enough to commit to, and they were confident enough to quit doing the 99% of activities that weren’t moving them closer to those goals.
What do these top achievers all have in common? A remarkable capacity to focus and prioritize.
It’s not just Jobs and Buffett either.
For the last century, authors have written on the power of concentration. Nonetheless, the fight continues.
Why? What are you doing incorrectly?
There is no answer.
Without a suitable structure, no one can expect you to improve your life and attain your most essential goals.
But you were already aware of it.
It is not by chance that you have arrived at this page. You are a high-performer, the sort of person that thinks differently and focuses on better themselves because they believe it is essential, not because someone tells them to.
However, the proper system is required.
I doubt thats news to you: you know that you need to study, mimic and exploit the components of others accomplishments.
Youve just never been given a system that accomplishes this.

The majority of productivity solutions fail for one of three reasons:
1. They do not instill confidence and clarity in you.
The difficulty that many individuals have, and that I experienced, was that all of my systems for school or non-entrepreneurial work were based on obtaining assignments from others and doing them.
How do I decide what to do when it’s up to me?
I’ve witnessed how a lack of clarity has eaten away at my life and the lives of people I’ve worked with for days, weeks, and months. You don’t trust yourself that the objectives you’re pursuing are the “correct” ones, so you establish a lot of them and end up making little progress on any of them.
You lack the courage to deter people from tugging you off course because you lack clarity on a single goal. You see a new project, a new strategy that may be faster or simpler, and you leap on it, leaving a trail of unfinished tasks in your wake.
We are all aware that if we attempt to work on too many distinct projects/concepts, none of them will succeed. But how can you pick when you’re interested in several different paths? When, if ever, do you expand out?
2. They contribute to feelings of overwork and overwhelm.
The issue with to-do lists and task management software is that lists never end, but your time and energy do. As a consequence, you wind yourself squeezing too many chores into your day and ending up fatigued and distracted.
You don’t have a mechanism to “operationalize” attention, even if you’ve done goal setting activities to get clear. Focusing is difficult since it involves making hundreds of decisions rather than just one. Every hour of every day, you must say no to conflicting priorities.

Most productivity books and programs ignore the notion of emotional work, dubbed The Resistance by Steve Pressfield.
The Resistance is the emotionally taxing job, such as writing a cold email to someone you like or posting your opinions for others to read. These are not difficult logistically, but they are difficult emotionally.
One of the most successful entrepreneurs and venture investors, Ben Horowitz, stated:
The capacity to regulate my own psyche was by far the most hardest skill I developed as CEO. When compared to keeping my thoughts in control, organizational design, process design, metrics, recruiting, and firing were all comparatively simple skills to learn. I thought I was tough coming in, but I wasn’t. I was a wimp.
