The Holy Land (the territory in and around modern-day Israel) is one of the most important areas in the world since it is the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity.
This location, which has a rich history dating back over 3,000 years, is a holy territory for three main faiths and the site of key events in religious history, including
Jesus’ life, ministry, and death;
the building and destruction of the First and Second Jewish Temples;
the creation of the Old and New Testaments, as well as portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls;
Masada’s spectacular siege; and
Muhammad’s voyage to Jerusalem.
The majority of our information of these and other fascinating events comes from written sources such as the Old and New Testaments, non-canonical works such as the Apocrypha, and works by the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus.
However, the Holy Land is also rich in tangible evidence attesting to these events—evidence that has just recently been unearthed. Archaeologists have shed intriguing new light on the history of this area with the information uncovered at various sites—from the rubble of an ancient citadel in the City of David to the contents of rock-cut tombs in the Kidron Valley to individual pieces of correspondence from caves in the Judaean Desert. Their discoveries have confirmed what we previously understood in several circumstances. In other circumstances, they have fundamentally altered our perspectives.
Explore these and other relics for yourself with The Holy Land Revealed, an amazing journey that will expand your awareness of this vibrant place’s millennia-long story. These 36 lectures, delivered by award-winning archaeologist and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Professor Jodi Magness, who has spent her career excavating at sites in and around Israel, give you an insider’s look at how archaeology helps us relive and encounter firsthand life during this formative period of human civilization. It’s also an opportunity to get up up and personal with ruins, antiquities, paintings, papers, and other long-buried items that will transport you deep beneath the pages of the Bible.
