The next pandemic is on its way, and we already know what it is. The Lancet Commissions recognized dementia as the “biggest worldwide challenge to health and social care in the twenty-first century” in 2017. It destroys families, and by the middle of the century, it will have destroyed our communities, our economy, and our efforts to achieve fairness. However, if we act now on dementia prevention, intervention, and care, we may expect to have a big influence not just on quality of life but also on family, community, and the larger economic impact. We must move quickly to debunk the idea that “there is nothing that can be done” to cure dementia, which prolongs diagnosis. Preventative and early-stage therapies are proven to be significantly more successful, yet most people are unaware of their existence, resulting in market factors that restrict the spread of early-stage services, which then perpetuates the delay in diagnosis, and so on.
Dr. Sherrie All, an expert in brain health and cognitive rehabilitation, will offer her toolkit for early-stage therapies geared to assist patients build and maintain cognitive reserve and functional abilities to retain independence during this Summit session.
Sherrie All, Ph.D., is a registered clinical neuropsychologist with over a decade of experience treating persons with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, TBI, MS, and other neurological illnesses. Dr. All founded and directs the Chicago Center for Cognitive Wellness, a private neuropsychology clinic focused on cognitive rehabilitation and brain health. Her evidence-based cognitive rehabilitation programs have assisted hundreds of individuals with cognitive losses in improving their thinking skills, increasing their functional independence, and improving their brain health.
Dr. All has served as a consultant to the Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging, where she assisted in the development and evaluation of a holistic brain fitness program. Her work with individuals on ways to reduce their personal risk of dementia has garnered the attention of media outlets such as The New Yorker and Crain’s Chicago Business. Dr. All received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and she is the author of The Neuroscience of Memory: Seven Skills to Optimize Your Brain Power, Improve Memory, and Stay Sharp at Any Age.
