Many behavioral, physical, and emotional disorders in children are expressions of traumatic and unfavorable events that the child’s body has stored. EMDR treatment, with its eight stages and procedural processes, provides a framework for clinicians to engage with the trauma legacy left in the embodied mind of the child.
This tape will discuss how EMDR treatment may be structured to accommodate children’s developmental needs as well as inner structures established in response to adversity and trauma. We will discuss the distinctions in the use of EMDR treatment in children with complex vs single incident trauma. What components may need to be added into a thorough EMDR treatment with children with histories of developmental and chronic trauma will be discussed in comparison to work with children with basic traumatic stress.
Furthermore, this lecture will provide a broader and more thorough understanding of trauma as a generational tale that many children who have faced tragedy carry inside them. Individual EMDR therapy, as opposed to systemic EMDR therapy, will be described. Clinicians attending this session will learn about the various nuances and complexities of employing EMDR therapy, as well as what makes it such an effective type of treatment for children.
