Tim Desmond, LMFT, is a Buddhist scholar, private practice therapist, and co-founder of the Morning Sun Mindfulness Center in Alstead, New Hampshire. He is the co-creator of The Self-Compassion Deck and the author of Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy (W.W. Norton, 2015). (PESI, 2016). He provides training and counseling to therapists all around the world, assisting them in incorporating mindfulness techniques into their practice.
Tim has given talks at Yale, the Institute of Meditation and Psychotherapy Colloquium, the Greater Oregon Behavioral Health Conference, and the International Society for Ethics in Psychology and Psychiatry. His articles on mindfulness and self-compassion have published in the periodicals Psychotherapy Networker and Mindfulness Bell. Tim was interviewed by the Huffington Post on self-compassion methods, and he writes for major mental health websites such as MadInAmerica.com.
He created and taught “dialogue-based mindfulness therapy,” a technique for teaching mindfulness and self-compassion in which the client is directed through a meditation while providing real-time feedback to the clinician about their experience. This input is used by the therapist to tweak and customize the meditation instructions so that the client learns the practice efficiently.
Tim was ordained into the Order of Interbeing by Thich Nhat Hanh in 2005, following many years of practice in that tradition. He leads meditation retreats around the United States and teaches at the Morning Sun Mindfulness Center in New Hampshire on a regular basis. Tim teaches Nonviolent Communication and Positive Psychology in addition to Thich Nhat Hanh’s legacy.
