THE PATH TO MASTERY (Part I)
Travel with Willem deTHOUARS (Kuntao Silat), Bruce JUCHNIK (KoshoRyu), and Tony ANNESI (Takeshin Sogo Budo) as they demonstrate technical milestones on the path to Mastery. Basics is, of course, your first signal. However, the fundamentals are more than they look. Even for a beginning, each art has a different idea of what the fundamentals should be. DeThouars and Juchnik examine fundamentals such as perception and awareness, while Annesi discusses posture and blocking stability. Not only should you grasp the fundamentals, but you should also put them to the test. Discover Shihan Annesi’s one-of-a-kind method for testing postural efficiency and improving your personal stance and structure.

Basics evolve into Forms and Techniques. You have mastered several fundamentals of self-defense. However, fundamentals frequently transform into the more difficult combinations known as kata or waza. Even these have more to them than meets the eye. Annesi’s bunkai of Tensho kata, for example, exemplifies a concept highlighted in his earlier Transmutation and Cracking the Kata Code videos: any form, whether kata or waza, may have great meaning underneath its surface. Learn how a basic kata may have subtle applications that even frequent practitioners may overlook.

Variation is produced through Form and Technique. For most trainees, progress in martial arts includes expanding their repertoire of techniques or variants. The more strategies you have at your disposal to respond to an assault, the better you will be able to manage that attack. Because variations are limitless, it is understandable that trainees see a broad repertory of variations as the pinnacle of martial progress. This movie implies that variation, while necessary, is only a stepping stone on the path to mastery.

Principles emerge from variations. Once you’ve amassed a plethora of versions, you’ll need a method to arrange them. A mile-long menu of technical options may clog even the master’s mind. This is why knowing how variations may be summed into a very small collection of Principles is the next step on the road to mastery (genri). Different artists approach Principle in different ways; yet, in order to master an art, you must move beyond the collection of concretes and integrate ideas. Are you new to the study of principles? Not after you’ve seen this sign.
