Description: Copyright: May 15, 2015Working with clients who self-injure raises several concerns:
What distinguishes it from suicide?
Is it necessary for me to report it?
What should I tell my parents?
What is the school’s function?
Is social media harmful or beneficial?
Is hospitalization necessary for children to improve?Dr. Tony Sheppard answers these concerns and more in this audio as he walks you through a multisystemic approach to assessing and treating non-suicidal self-injury. This video focuses not just on risk assessment, but also on how to work effectively with clients, including both simple evaluation and management of self-injury and more major care, such as residential treatment and management of multiple self-harm behaviors. Several approaches, including motivational interviewing, cognitive therapy, replacement skills, and complementary family, group, and psychiatric therapies, will be thoroughly studied.
We will analyze the underlying motives for self-harm practices throughout the recording, discovering problems connected to trauma and/or body image concerns. You will feel confident in your abilities to tailor interventions to specific clients (scaling up or intensifying therapy as needed), while avoiding and reacting to potential treatment pitfalls and legal/ethical difficulties at the conclusion of the recording.
