Few men may claim to have transformed their sport. Toshihiko Koga is one of them. Koga is the most talked about and revered Judoka of his age, having won three World Championships and two Olympic Gold and Silver medals. He is regarded as one of the greatest innovators in sports.
Koga, who has recently withdrawn from international competition, exposes for the first time the secrets of his astounding “reverse Judo” techniques: his own versions of Ippon seoi-nage, Sode-tsuri-komi-goshi, Koshi-guruma, and his one handed Morote seoi-nage are all thoroughly explored. Demonstrations at the Kodokan in Tokyo are followed by several competitive instances during his career.
This stunning one-hour production includes competition footage from the Junior World Championships in 1986, the Kano Cup in 1987, the 1995 Japanese team trials, the 1987, ’89, ’91, and 1995 World Championships, the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and the incredible final of the All Japan Open Weight Championships in 1990, in which he fights World Open Weight champion Naoya Ogawa despite weighing only 71Kgs!
Koga discusses his formative years in Judo, his Judo philosophy, and the highs and lows of his extraordinary career in an intimate and enlightening interview.
