Addiction rates are rising as the present brain illness paradigm fails. As clinicians, we are always looking for innovative approaches to assist our clients that represent cutting-edge, trauma-informed treatment. The Felt Sense Polyvagal Model (FSPM) is a paradigm change away from the traditional illness approach and toward an embodied understanding of trauma and its underbelly, addiction, as seen through the lens of our autonomic nerve system (ANS). Addictions are viewed as the body’s effort to emotionally regulate itself by serving as propellors that enable nervous system alterations. Addictions, from a polyvagal perspective, are adaptive reactions to dysfunctional situations.
Clinicians will learn how to utilize the FSPM visual model to assist clients in recognizing their ANS states. Working with the Felt Sense, our bodies’ intuitive understanding, also helps clients integrate traumatic events and develop feelings of comfort. There will be specific methods for building harm reduction strategies given. Case studies will be provided.
