Ted Talks Freediving on Tuesday
Every Tuesday at 7:00 PM EST, I held a live show on my Instagram account @ImmersionFD. I tell anecdotes from my work, address educational issues, answer questions, and conclude with some prizes.
All previous Tuesday Ted Talks Freediving episodes may be found here. This course contains over 19 hours of freediving instructive content from my freediving classes. These episodes are jam-packed with good freediving material that the majority of freedivers and spearfishers are unaware of.
Tuesday Ted Talks freediving answers nearly every freediving question you might ask. Here’s a rundown of the subjects I’ve covered and questions I’ve addressed in the first nine episodes.
What sort of dry breath holding exercise is best for improving performance?
Why do I have the sensation that there is water in my ear after a day of diving?
What is the most effective technique to breathe while freediving?
What should I do if my friend suffers a power outage?
What is a loss of motor control, and what should I do if my friend has one?
What exactly is a lung squeeze, and how can I avoid one?
How can I know if I’m overweight?
What are the three most critical safety precautions to take when freediving?
How can you increase the amount of oxygen in your brain after a freedive?
Jeromy Gamble, the proprietor of Spearing magazine, was a guest and talked about the benefits of hunting in three-person teams and how he incorporates this into his spearfishing.
You may watch and listen to all previous Ted Talks whenever you want.
Enjoy the show and stay safe out there; it’s not even that difficult!
Your Professor
Mr. Ted Harty
In 2005, I began my underwater experiences (career) as a Scuba Instructor in the Florida Keys. During that time, I became a PADI Staff Instructor and also taught for NAUI and SSI. Kirk Krack taught my first professional freediving course with Performance Freediving International (PFI) in 2008. I was really taken away by the lesson, and freediving rapidly became an obsession for me…as it does with many things!
I became a PFI freediving teacher in 2009 and have been teaching freediving full-time since since. As an out-of-shape and overweight ex-scuba teacher, I entered my first freediving competition in 2009 and advanced from an 80-foot dive to a 177-foot dive in just three weeks! After that encounter, I began to wonder what I might do if I got in shape and committed to training more seriously. I went on to break a USA Freediving record, win three freediving competitions, be named Captain of the Men’s USA Freediving team at the World Championships, become a PFI Instructor Trainer, and my deepest freedive to date is 279 feet.
While I love competing as a freediver, my main passion has always been teaching. As a result, I’ve spent the last five years focusing on the educational aspect of freediving by teaching seminars through my firm, Immersion Freediving. Deeper Blue assessed my 4-day PFI Intermediate freediving course and stated that it was the most professional training they had seen in the dive business in 33 years. The whole review may be found here.
I’ve worked with Tim Kennedy (UFC fighter, US Army Ranger, and star of the History Channel movie Hunting Hitler), Ben Greenfield (fitness expert and podcaster), and other professional military instructors. I’ve been on The Spear, Noob Spearo, and Ben Greenfield’s podcasts; I’ve written an essay for every issue of Spearing Magazine since 2013, and I’m Spearing Magazine’s official freediving course. Deep Freediving, Renegade Science, What the Ocean Tells Us About Ourselves, and One Breath have all featured me. I’ve also been a featured speaker at the Blue Wild Exhibition, the largest freediving and spearfishing expo in the United States, for the past five years.
