When Brand entered the life-changing recovery program, he was introduced to the original 12 Steps:

We confessed that we had lost control of our addiction and that our lives had become unmanageable.

We grew to believe that we may be restored to sanity by a Power bigger than ourselves.

We took the decision to entrust our will and our life to God as we understood Him.

We conducted a thorough and fearless moral assessment of ourselves.

We confessed our transgressions to God, ourselves, and another human being.

We were completely willing for God to eliminate all of our character flaws.

We sincerely requested that He eliminate our flaws.

We prepared a list of everyone we had wronged and resolved to make apologies to everyone.

We attempted to make direct reparations to such persons wherever feasible, unless when doing so might endanger them or others.

We continued to take personal inventory and swiftly apologized when we were incorrect.

We strove to enhance our conscious contact with God as we understood Him via prayer and meditation, praying exclusively for understanding of His will for us and the capacity to carry it out.

We sought to transmit this message to addicts and to implement these values in all our dealings after experiencing a spiritual awakening as a consequence of these stages.
