This video collection includes VHS Rips of Unsui Manaka’s demonstration of the whole set of Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu techniques, including a unique two tape set of teaching created solely for senior members of his organization, the Jinenkan.
Unsui Manaka is well-known for his traditional, koryu-style Takamatsuden school teaching.
Manaka Sensei was formerly the Bujinkan’s senior most pupil, having trained under Hatsumi Sensei when Takamatsu Sensei was still alive.
For his own reasons, he opted to go after the Jinenkan on his own.
These cassettes cover every technique in the Gyokko Ryu.
Gyokko ryu’s motions are regarded as the basis for Takamatsuden schools, and they are the source of the Sanshin no Kata and Kihon Kappo.

GYOKKO RYUK’S HISTORY

osshijutsu Cho Busho and Yo Gyokko allegedly departed warring China and landed in Japan during the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618 AD – 907 AD), carrying with them the basis upon which the Gyokko Ryu would eventually be founded.
According to some, the school’s basic tactics were developed by a princess in the Chinese Imperial Court who employed fast body motions to assault particular spots on the body.
This corresponds to this school’s Kosshijutsu hitting methods.
According to history and our study, the first martial art schools in India, Tibet, and China were known as tiger striking (kosshijutsu) schools, and Gyokko Ryu is the jeweled tiger school.
The Kihon Happo is composed of the first two levels of the Gyokko Ryu, Ki Gata and Torite Kihon Gata, which are also the school’s foundational techniques.
The forceful blocks and balance taking are typical of the Gyokko Ryu.
The school focuses in Kosshijutsu (attack against muscles) and Shitojutsu (strike against bones) (use of thumbs and fingers).
Kosshijutsu translates as “knocking down the opponent with one finger.”
Koshi can also indicate ‘backbone,’ since Kosshijutsu is the martial arts’ backbone.
Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu is an offshoot of Gyokko Ryu Kosshijutsu.
Ten Ryaku Uchu Gassho (heaven and universe prayer), Chi Ryaku Futen Goshin Gassho (circle of wind prayer), Jin Ryaku Chi Sui Ka Fu Henka Ryaku are all used by the Gyokko Ryu (circle of earth, water, fire, wind prayer).
Kaku Gassho is “Kongo’ (cloud), Suirin (water ring), and Gassho Kuji Kiri” (fire and winds).
These are also known as the ‘Sanpo Gassho’ (three treasures) and may be found in the Koto Ryu.
The Gyokko Ryu is divided into five levels:
1) Ki Gata 5 methods
2) Kihon Torite Gata
Jo Ryaku no Maki 3) Chu Ryaku no Maki (4) Ge Ryaku no Maki (5) The Koppo San Ryaku Hiden katas are also known as Jo Ryaku no Maki (upper level), Chu Ryaku no Maki (intermediate level), and Ge Ryaku no Maki (lower level) (lower level).
Each is written on its own scroll.
Kurai Dori (assessing the circumstance), Shin Shingan (God’s heart, God’s eyes), and Tenmon Chimon are also included in the Gyokko Ryu (heaven, earth tactics).
The Gyokko Ryu has one basic rule: eliminate the enemy’s power while leaving his life alone.
When a combat is about to begin, the Gyokko Ryu instructs that instead of letting the opponent win, take him down with a technique that is only as powerful as is required for the moment.
Another Gyokko Ryu phrase is “Bushigokoro wo motte totoshi no nasu” (The warrior’s heart is priceless and necessary).
Sanshin no kata is one of the hidden techniques (secret transmissions).
Takamatsu only taught this to Hatsumi Sensei.
The following are the Gyokko Ryu’s nine rules:
1) The character ‘nin’ implies to risk one’s life to protect the nation.
2) Forget about yourself, be patient, and don’t be afraid to die. 3) When in danger, speak or show nothing. 4) When a strong opponent appears, maintain an invincible attitude. 5) Serve and defend the master as you would your own parents.
6) Vices reduce your proficiency; 7) Being inebriated impairs your judgment; 8) Destroy your enemy’s strength but not his life; and 9) Do not educate others without permission from the master.
