Walt’s terminology, technique choices, and the spin he puts on them all attest to his wrestling background. These are hardly top-secret, cutting-edge movements invented in Botafogo or Barra da Ticuca. They are, however, functional and may be used with or without a gi. Walt spends a significant portion of his instruction on set-ups, which are oddly disregarded on most cassettes – strangely, because no move works without a set-up, and the better the set-up, the better the move works. You couldn’t do much worse than Walt’s rendition of these largely simple tactics. I really enjoyed his method of bridging the gap, which would be ideal in the mayhem of a brawl or a Dog Brothers stick battle. He does an excellent job of linking the motions. You try a hip throw, your opponent defends logically, and you utilize his new body position to go for a different take-down.
