Eating disorders are complex, multi-layered and pernicious. And yet, even the best evidenced-based interventions currently available have limited long-term outcomes. Ironically, the body, the very stage where the war is waged, may be the missing link to effective treatment for eating disorders. Embodied Recovery is a new model of treatment designed to bring the body itself to the forefront of the treatment process. Grounded in the science of Polyvagal Theory, the ERED model addresses the role of neurobiological organization, the subjective experience of self, and our basic human needs for attachment and defense on our capacity to eat and digest effectively.
Paula Scatoloni, LCSW, CEDS, is a psychotherapist, Certified Eating Disorders Specialist, and integrative embodiment educator in Chapel Hill, NC. She has worked in the field of eating disorders for over two decades. Paula served as the Eating Disorder Coordinator at Duke University CAPS for nine years and has taught extensively on the etiology and treatment of eating disorders through workshops, professional trainings, and conferences. Her background includes teaching embodied movement classes at treatment centers and co-developing the first intensive outpatient program for eating disorders in the U.S. with Dr. Anita Johnston. Paula is the co-developer of The Embodied Recovery Institute and the Embodied Recovery for Eating Disorders model.

Rachel Lewis, MS, EDS, LPC, LMBT, is a somatically integrative psychotherapist, dually-licensed in counseling and therapeutic massage and bodywork and the Co-founder of the Embodied Recovery Institute, which provides training to eating disorders professional in a trauma-informed, relationally-oriented and somatically integrated model of eating disorders treatment.
She is Certified Advanced Practitioner in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and has advanced training and 25+ years’ experience in diverse somatic therapies including Craniosacral Therapy, Energetic Osteopathy, Oncology massage and Aromatherapy. Rachel began providing somatically integrative psychotherapy to eating disorders patients at the residential, PHP and IOP levels of care.
Currently in private practice in Chapel Hill, NC, Rachel works with people healing from trauma, eating disorders, and dissociative disorders. She has extensive experience as a teacher and presenter, focusing on accessing the body’s unique capacity to give voice to the subconscious and to lay the foundation for healing and maintaining psychological and physical health.
