Yi Quan may be conceived of as a hybrid of Tai Chi, western boxing, and hsing yi.
Long forms have been eliminated, and the style has been reduced to the bare necessities for health and self-defense.
It is conceptually similar to Bruce Lee’s jeet kune do in that it adapts western boxing training techniques and equipment to internal kung fu, but it was developed in the 1930s by master Wang Xiangzhai.
In China, Yi Quan is also known as Da Cheng Chuan, and in Japan, Taikiken.
Although it emphasizes martial efficiency, it keeps the delicate attitude of Tai Chi training.
Cardio conditioning is advised but not required. Yi Quan conditioning, known as Zhan zhuang, focuses on standing in static postures for lengthy periods of time.
Yi Quan may be performed at any age, and practitioners do not have to be athletes.
Sparring is recommended, but not at full strength and force, as this might injure your training partner.
Nonetheless, some yiquan practitioners compete in san shou or kickboxing tournaments and perform fairly well.
