DescriptionJanina Fisher, PhD, CC17 Workshop 15 – Healing the Fragmented Self in Couples Therapy
Description:
Couples join relationships with the unconscious expectation that they will be reparative, that their wounded child selves will finally experience the cherishing they have craved. When one person provokes or disappoints the other’s damaged child self, the protector parts respond with rage, retreat, threats, or humiliation. Couples are assisted in identifying wounded, angry, and afraid sentiments as signals from young parts and their powerful protective responses as those of guardian parts in this paradigm. Couples build a new vocabulary that fosters safety and connection by having a method to ‘hover over’ their disagreements, ‘own’ hurt and disappointment as the sentiments of a small kid, and accept responsibility for their fight/flight reaction.
Objectives of Education:
Recognize provoked acts and emotions in the relationship as signals from kid parts.
Describe how the protector portions contributed to the relationship’s issues.
Showcase new relationship patterns in which the calming of one’s youthful parts becomes the center of attention rather than being thought to be the partner’s duty.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
