This course examines the professional tasks most commonly connected with regulatory issues for mental health practitioners, such as sexual and nonsexual boundary breaches, “law-psych” interfaces, competence, “moral” crimes, licensing board and malpractice lawsuits. The session discusses the origins of these issues as well as methods for preventing and/or managing them.
Objectives of Education:
List the most common reasons for disciplinary action against mental health providers.
Identify the major vulnerabilities for doctors.
Identify the key risk factors for patients.
Give two examples of “moral” violations.
At least two phases in licensing board action processes should be listed.

A. Steven Frankel, PhD, JD, ABPP Seminars and products related to A. Steven Frankel: 60A. Steven Frankel PhD, JD, ABPP is a clinical psychologist and a registered attorney in California and the District of Columbia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in both Clinical and Forensic Psychology. He received his PhD from Indiana University and interned at Columbia University’s Psychiatric Institute.
Dr. Frankel joined clinical practice after leaving full-time university employment, with both inpatient and outpatient duties. His psychology practice began to focus on the diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic and dissociative disorders in 1980. In 1990, he began assisting with trauma therapy programs at private mental institutions. In 1993, he collaborated with Walter and Linda Young to establish a section at Del Amo Hospital in Torrance, CA for the treatment of traumatic and dissociative disorders, and he remained a consultant to the program until July of 2000. He has been a member of the ISSD since 1990 and a Fellow since 1998. He was elected President of the ISSD in 2001-02.
