Working with troubled marriages involves concentration and balance, much like walking a tightrope. Both partners want you to side with them, and it’s easy to be swept up in the tremendous emotionality of the sessions. So, how can you keep a feeling of balance while still creating an environment conducive to healing? In this training, you’ll learn how to connect with the concerns that the couple brings to you and shift the emotional temperature of the session using the concepts of Imago Relationship Therapy. You’ll learn how to use techniques like mirroring and validation to create safety and fresh possibilities in difficult relationships, with a specific emphasis on all the tiny alterations you can make with body language, phrase stems, and voice tone. We will discuss the implications of interpersonal neurobiology and mindfulness practice for couples counseling.
Objectives of Education:
Explain how to utilize mirroring and validation while working with dysfunctional relationships.

Jette Simon is a Clinical Psychologist (Aarhus University, Denmark degree) with over 30 years of expertise in couples counseling. She is the Director of the Washington DC Training Institute for Couples Therapy and the Copenhagen Institute for Imago Therapy. She works at Imago International as a Senior Clinical Instructor. She presently works with kids in both the US and Europe. Imago: The Therapy of Love is her book.
