DescriptionDescription:
The session will look at clinical applications of Polyvagal Theory. The Polyvagal Theory connects the evolution of the autonomic nervous system to affective experience, emotional expression, facial gestures, vocal communication, and contingent social behavior, and provides a plausible explanation for several features compromised during stress and observed in a variety of psychiatric disorders. Humans have developed as extremely sociable, mutually dependant creatures. When confronted with stress and hazard, our autonomic nerve systems adjust by dictating more primitive methods. Therapeutic therapies that target the capacity to feel safety and engage in the management of these physiological states are successful in treating diseases caused by a persistent dependence on older stress responses. Positive treatment results occur from the recruitment of our most evolved adaptive brain circuit—the “social engagement system,” which expands the patient’s biobehavioral capacity.
Objectives of Education:
Describe how a Polyvagal viewpoint can help with clinical assessment and treatment of a variety of diseases.
Explain how social ties and stress reactions in social circumstances are influenced by autonomic nervous system control.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
