This 6-hour program addresses the profound changes occurring in the United States’ health-care system, the implications for mental health care, and, consequently, the implications for mental health care providers. We begin with a discussion of the insurance industry’s role in health care and how that role has expanded over the last 50-60 years, affecting mental health professionals’ licensure and practices. Then we go on to the current modifications, which include:

Accountable Care Organizations under the Affordable Care Act Current Procedural Terminology
Electronic Health Care Records DSM vs. ICD HIPAA Changes

Insurance panels for independent practitioners are also covered, as are the Parity Law, “Professional Wills,” alternatives to licensed mental health practice, and licensing board action summaries.

 

Objectives of Education:

Define the terms “ACA,” “ACO,” “CPT,” “DSM,” “ICD,” “EHR,” and “HIPAA.”
Describe a significant alternative to licensed mental health practice.
Describe two of DSM-5’s beneficial features.
Define the term “crosswalk.”
Provide at least two examples of “professional wills.”
List at least two of the most common reasons for disciplinary action against mental health care providers.

A. Steven Frankel PhD, JD, ABPP is a clinical psychologist and a licensed attorney in California and the District of Columbia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in both Clinical and Forensic Psychology. He received his PhD from Indiana University and interned at Columbia University’s Psychiatric Institute.

Dr. Frankel entered clinical practice after leaving full-time university service, with both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. His psychology practice began to focus on the diagnosis and treatment of post-traumatic and dissociative disorders in 1980. In 1990, he began consulting with trauma treatment programs at private psychiatric hospitals. In 1993, he collaborated with Walter and Linda Young to establish a unit at Del Amo Hospital in Torrance, CA for the treatment of traumatic and dissociative disorders, and he remained a consultant to the program until July of 2000. He has been a member of the ISSD since 1990 and a Fellow since 1998. He was elected President of the ISSD in 2001-02.
