Talking about ‘what occurred’ generally elicits more conflict than empathy in traumatized couples and does not modify their habitual trauma-related animal defensive survival reactions of fight, flight, freeze, submit, or scream for assistance. The language of blame is limited by encouraging couples to examine their bodily responses to each other and to use gesture instead of words. Furthermore, somatic treatments control the body and neural system, lowering each partner’s sensation of danger. Without using words, each partner may be taught to simultaneously open and guard the heart, so providing a sense of safety for both self and other.

Objectives of Education:

 

Identify patterns that promote or reduce animal defensive survival response activation.

Show an awareness of how to improve couples’ abilities to detect their physical communication.

Incorporate somatic techniques into couples therapy.

 

Janina Fisher, PhD, Professor 11 related seminars and products

Janina Fisher, PhD is a certified Clinical Psychologist and Instructor at Bessel van der Kolk’s Trauma Center, an outpatient clinic and research facility. She is a previous president of the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, an EMDR International Association Credit Provider, a faculty member of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, and a former instructor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fisher has spoken at the Cape Cod Institute, the Harvard Medical School Conference Series, the EMDR International Association Annual Conference, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Westminster in London, the Psychotraumatology Institute of Europe, and the Esalen Institute. Dr. Fisher speaks and educates on themes linked to the integration of research and therapy, as well as how to incorporate these newer trauma treatment paradigms into established therapeutic techniques, both domestically and globally.
