Advanced Relational Life Therapy (RLT) – Terry Real, LICSW – CC19 Workshop 15

This session expands on the first phase of RLT by delving into the theory and techniques of phase two: Family Of Origin Work, trauma, and Inner Child Work. We established each partner’s relational attitude and how the two positions combine to generate the couple’s choreography – the vicious loop they come to us locked within – in phase one. Now we return via the posture to where it began – the specific childhood circumstances to which each partner’s Adaptive Child portion was adjusting. We isolate the small kid component and creatively engage it – begin to relate to it, focusing on one partner at a time. The therapist establishes an explicit, compassionate interaction between the person’s Functional Adult self and the Adaptive Child portion of themselves that has driven the dysfunctional relational position.

 

Objectives of Education:

1. List the benefits and drawbacks of inner child work in couples therapy.
2. Differentiate between injured and adaptable kid components.
3. Describe the approaches for promoting a healing relationship between the child and adult portions of oneself.
